Local surfers prepare for big waves from storms

NARRANGANSETT, R.I. (WPRI) — As the wet weather moves in through our area Eyewitness News caught up with some local surfers who cannot wait for the huge swells.

“It’s what I love to do so if you love what you do, might as well go out there and have fun,” said Peyton Albanese.

The slew of storms rocking our area this week we bring big waves, strong winds and potential flooding,

But for surfers, they are actually hoping for our area to get hit hard.

“It was pretty great compared to how it was a few days ago. The waves were clean,” said Brian Firth. “They weren’t the best, but I’ve definitely seen some worse days and I’m hoping for better days this week.”

The surfers plan to ride out the storms despite warnings from Rhode Island EMA of the potential for strong rip currents due to Hurricane Joaquin.

“This one’s got a couple things going on,” said Jacob Guilbert. “It looks like it’s going to be drawn out the whole week and peaking towards Saturday, so hopefully the boss gives me the day off and we can get in the water.”

The EMA said now is the time to get your emergency kit together.
