PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Finding a safe and affordable car isn’t easy, especially for a family on a tight budget. Thankfully, parents now have many more options for their teenagers than even just one year ago.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) recently released its latest list of best used cars for teens. The report found that bigger and heavier vehicles are the safest, with the Volvo S80, Ford Taurus and SUVs such as the Ford Flex making the list.

The institute found parents should look for used cars that feature electronic stability control systems, which help drivers maintain control on curves and slippery roads. The report also warned parents to avoid buying cars that have high horsepower, which may tempt teens to drive unsafely.

Vehicles on the recommended list cost under $20,000. Some other affordable top picks include the 2009 or newer Volkswagen Jetta for $5,600, 2006 or newer Volvo XC90 for $4,600, and the 2006 and newer Subaru Tribeca for $6,000.

The annual report also found new driver courses don’t boost safety for teenagers.
