World War II veteran receives Purple Heart

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – A local veteran has received a long-overdue medal for his service in WWII.

Len Harten, 91, of North Kingstown, received a Purple Heart Tuesday for his Naval military service in a ceremony at the Providence VA Medical Center.

Hospital Director, Dr. Susan Mackenzie, along with Command Master Chief Benjamin Pierson from the U.S. Naval War College, and Harten’s sister Marilyn Bricker were in attendance.

Harten survived the sinking of the USS Nauset in Salerno, Italy, on Sept. 9, 1943.
