PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A Providence man has been sentenced to federal prison on drug and firearm charges, U.S. Attorney Peter Neronha announced Friday.
According to Neronha’s office, Darren Monteiro, age 28, was sentenced to 41 months in prison and six years of supervised release after he completes his sentence. Monteiro pleaded guilty in July to one count each of distribution of heroin and possession of a firearm by a felon.
According to court records, Providence police began an investigation into Monteiro’s trafficking activities back in November of 2013. Police say he also arranged to purchase a firearm from an undercover police officer and said he was going to use it to commit an armed robbery.
Monteiro was arrested on November 13, 2013.
