WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) – Teachers in Warwick protest at Tuesday night’s school committee meeting over their continued lack of a contract.
Teachers, students and parents filled the room at Toll Gate High School, holding signs and chanting.
Committee Chair Jennifer Ahearn said this is the largest contract change in nearly three decades. She says the contract expired in August, and there are negotiations in place for a new one, but it may include teacher layoffs and lower salaries.
“For some reason, you know the teachers feel as though they control this district, and I’m not saying they don’t have input. But they don’t really look at the management and the administration as viable leaders,” said Ahearn.
Ahearn says the reason for the changes is due to a 20 year declining student population. She hopes to have a new contract in place by the end of this year.
