WOONSOCKET, R.I. (WPRI) — The Providence County Grand Jury handed up an indictment Wednesday charging a Woonsocket man in the murder of his girlfriend.
Alvin Huggins is accused of stabbing 28-year-old Yanira Flores to death in May at the apartment they shared on Willow Street.
Woonsocket police said the couple’s 6-year-old boy and 4-year-old girl were inside the home at the time, but they were not present when officers arrived. Flores died from her injuries at Landmark Medical Center.
Huggins, 31, was apprehended in Dorchester the following day.
Police said Huggins has a violent criminal history. Court record indicate he was sentenced to 18 months in prison for slashing a man with a knife from his left ear to below his jaw line.
The documents revealed Flores gave a witness statement to the incident, saying she thought Huggins used a pocket knife to slash the victim’s face.
Prosecutors said Huggins is also a parole violator on four different offenses.
Huggins is scheduled to be arraigned in superior court on one count of domestic murder Nov. 4.
