Man charged after $1.5M in untaxed tobacco products seized

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A Pawtucket man has been arrested after police seized untaxed little cigars, smokeless tobacco and other items classified as “other tobacco products” valued at $1.5 million.

Rhode Island State Police say Yassine Nasser was arraigned Thursday in District Court in Providence on charges of importing cigarettes with intent to evade taxes, laundering money and other offenses.

The 36-year-old Nasser pleaded not guilty and was released on $1,000 personal recognizance. A listed phone number for Nasser could not be found and it was not known Friday if he’s represented by a lawyer.

Police say the tax loss to Rhode Island was about $900,000.

State Police say a four-month investigation found evidence that Nasser illegally distributed “other tobacco products” to convenience stores throughout the state.
