Police: Man stole purse from church during funeral

FREETOWN, Mass. (WPRI) — Police are working to track down a Fall River man who they say stole a purse from inside a church while a funeral was going on.

According to Freetown police, Casady Roy attended a funeral at St. John Neumann Church, then took the purse while exiting the church.

The victims told police they placed the purse near the lobby prior to being seated. It contained personal property and two cell phones, police said.

The assistant director of Cathedral Camp, located next door, said she was sitting in her office when she saw someone down by the water nearby.

“There was a gentleman, a young kid, leaning down by the water saying he had to leave mass because he was so upset and he needed air,” Rena Lemieux recalled.

An hour later, the funeral director asked her if she had seen anyone. When they went down to the water, they found a purse by the rocks.

Roy, 23, of Eastern Avenue, is facing charges of larceny in a building and larceny over $250.

“The boy is 23 years old. They buried a 23-year-old yesterday. It’s his friend, probably someone he grew up with,” added Lemiuex. “He stole the pocketbook from that boy’s aunt, but maybe it’s a blessing in disguise.”

Lemieux said she hopes Roy’s impending arrest will help him with whatever issues he may have.
