PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Hurricane Patricia made landfall Friday night in the pacific – and the record-breaking storm is having an impact that reaches all the way back to Southern New England.
As the historic hurricane barreled into Mexico, a Fall River man was running for safety.
Lance Houston said he started evacuating early Friday from where he was vacationing in Puerto Vallarta – about 100 miles north of where Hurricane Patricia made landfall as a category 5 hurricane.
Houston was live tweeting his evacuation process – which included hopping aboard a bus headed five hours in-land to Guadalajara.
Back in Rhode Island, newlyweds Mary Ann Barajas and Missy Fiorentino say they should be packing their bags for their honeymoon. Due to Patricia, they said they had to put their trip to Puerto Vallarta on hold.
“We’re hopeful that the storm doesn’t damage the area so bad that we won’t get to go,” Barajas said.
“Our original plans were to go right after the wedding, so we’re grateful that we did change them because we’d be stuck there right now,” added Missy. “We decided to wait for the end of the month. We wanted to go at the end of the month for Halloween and the festivals they have there.”
The trip cost the couple $4,500 and if they don’t end up going to Mexico, they said they will be able to use the trip as a credit to go somewhere else.
