NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — A state trooper arrested a New Bedford man Monday morning, shortly after police said the man attacked a convenience store clerk and stole cigarettes.

New Bedford police said Cedric Wade-McIlwain, 32, tried to buy a carton of cigarettes at a 7-Eleven on Acushnet Avenue shortly after midnight, using a debit card that did not match his ID. When the card reader declined the transaction, police said McIlwain jumped over the counter and fought with the clerk. Police said McIlwain grabbed several packs of cigarettes, then ran out of the store.

A short time later, police said a state trooper spotted McIlwain in the area of Sawyer and North Front Street. The suspect tried to run, but police said the trooper gave chase and caught him. The stolen cigarettes were recovered and returned to the store.

McIlwain was scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday morning on unarmed robbery charges.
