Newsmakers 11/6/2015: RI overdose epidemic; challenges at DCYF

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – This week on the first half of Newsmakers: Executive Director of the RI Department of Health Dr. Nicole Alexander-Scott and Director of the Department of  Behavioral Healthcare, Developmental Disabilities and Hospitals (BHDDH). Drug overdose deaths in Rhode Island have increased 119% since 2009, and the state has the highest illicit drug use per capita in the nation. A task force created through an executive order signed by Gov. Gina Raimondo looks to reduce overdose deaths by 1/3 in the next three years. Dr. Alexander-Scott and Director Montanaro lay out their plans and challenges to battle the narcotic drug epidemic.

On the second half of Newsmakers: Chief Strategy Officer with the Executive Office of Health and Human Services Jamia McDonald lays out her plan to turn around the troubled Dept. of Children Youth and Families.
