PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Thousands of people will be pouring into downtown Providence this weekend, as Rhode Island Comic Con kicks off Friday.
But, one star has been forced to cancel at the last minute.
Some Star Wars fans were disappointed to hear actress Carrie Fisher won’t be at this weekend’s event as originally planned. Comic Con officials announced she is sick and unable to attend.
Fans who had bought tickets to meet Fisher will be refunded. And she has rescheduled to return to next year’s Comic Con.
The event kicks off Friday at 3 p.m. at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center and the Rhode Island Convention Center.
The mayor of Providence and others are celebrating with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 2:45 p.m.
City leaders are urging anyone traveling into the city to plan for a little extra time. Tens of thousands of people are expected to come for the event.
The annual convention brings together fans of comics, anime, movies, novels and pop culture.
Last year, the event was so crowded, at least 1,500 ticket holders were turned away at the door.
In addition to Comic Con, WaterFire is holding its third annual Salute to Veterans on Saturday. Also happening Saturday, Trinity Rep is holding its opening of “A Christmas Carol.”
Updated Comic Con information will be available to the public on RIComicCon.com, and on the RI Comic Con Facebook and Twitter pages.
