Grand jury indicts woman in Smithfield robbery spree

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A grand jury has indicted a Johnston woman accused of taking part in a one-day crime spree in Smithfield.

The indictment charges Danielle Garofalo, 25, with first degree robbery, conspiracy, assault with a dangerous weapon, and assault with intent to rob.

Police say Garofalo and an accomplice, 25-year-old George Lial, held up two Putnam Pike gas stations minutes apart early in the morning on Aug. 9. According to police, Lial threatened the clerks with a tire iron, while Garofalo drove the getaway vehicle. Police said the couple had two young children with them.

Later that day, police said Garofalo tried to steal a woman’s purse at Dave’s Marketplace on Cedar Swamp Road. In that case, police said Lial was driving the getaway vehicle.

Garofalo is scheduled to be arraigned in Providence County Superior Court on Dec. 2.
