EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — The next Virginia-class submarine being built for the Navy will be called the USS Massachusetts.
Navy Secretary Ray Mabus made the announcement in a pre-taped video message that played Sunday at Gillette Stadium during the Patriots game.
“A ship’s naming is the first milestone in bringing it to life, and here continues the long tradition of strong connection between the people of Massachusetts and our Navy,” said Mabus.
Navy officials say the submarine will be built under a unique teaming agreement between General Dynamics Electric Boat and Huntington Ingalls Industries’ Newport News Shipbuilding division. Both companies will build certain portions of each submarine. The future Massachusetts will be delivered by Huntington Ingalls.
The newest USS Massachusetts will be the fifth Navy vessel to serve under that name.
The most famous USS Massachusetts is the World War II battleship, which has served as a museum and memorial in Fall River since 1965.
