WOONSOCKET, R.I. (WPRI) — A scene at Woonsocket High School has been cleared after a suspicious package prompted an evacuation Thursday.
Police and the bomb squad responded to the school after a suitcase was left outside near the entrance, according to Det. Sgt. Matthew Ryan.
Students and faculty were evacuated out of an abundance of caution as authorities investigated. The suitcase was determined to be simply that, Ryan said.
The scene was cleared by 3:30 p.m.
An event scheduled for Thursday night at the school will be held as planned.
Suspicious letter at RIC
Earlier in the day, emergency crews were called to Rhode Island College for a report of a suspicious letter.
According to Providence fire officials, the letter was reported in the mailroom around 11:25 a.m.
Officials said it was not addressed any student or employee associated with the college. The fire department did not disclose who the letter was addressed to.
According to fire officials, a worker handled the letter and felt “something granular” inside the business-size envelope.
As a precaution, the building was evacuated and HAZMAT crews responded to the scene.
Officials told Eyewitness News all tests came back negative and the envelope contained a letter and glitter.
Fire officials did not read the letter but said it will be passed along to the FBI for further investigation.
