PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Nick Lappin (Geneva, Ill.) tied the game in the second period and sophomore Tim Ernst (Pickering, Ontario) made a career-high 40 saves as the Brown men’s hockey team and Colgate skated to a 1-1 draw Friday night at Meehan Auditorium.
Brown (1-3-2, 1-2-2) remains unbeaten over the last three games, while Colgate moves to 4-7-1 overall and 1-3-1 in the ECAC.
Lappin, the reigning ECAC Player of the Week, scored his fifth tally of the season. Ernst stopped 16 shots in the opening period and then made seven saves in overtime to secure the tie.
Colgate controlled the opening period, taking advantage of five Brown penalties, but managed just one power-play goal when Tyson Spink put the Raiders on the board during the third power play at 17:16.
Brown rebounded after the first intermission, outshooting the Raiders by a 14-6 margin the second period. Nick Lappin evened the score at 7:34 with three seconds left on the Brown power play. Brandon Pfeil (West Vancouver, British Columbia) slid the puck to Lappin in the slot, before the senior beat Finn for his fourth goal in three games. Rookie Tommy Marchin (Algonac, Mich.) also picked up an assist on the play.
The Bears made another strong push late in the period, when Marchin charged at the net and Finn let up a rebound in front, but Mark Naclerio (Milford, Conn.) hit the crossbar as the teams were even at the second intermission, 1-1.
Brown held a slight edge in shots during the third period, 13-11, before Colgate made a rush in the final minutes of the period only to be denied by Ernst on several attempts to force overtime.
After Naclerio had a shot turned away by Finn to start overtime, the Raiders took over the rest of the way with a flurry of shots, but Ernst came up with seven saves during the final four minutes to keep the score at 1-1.
