Grandmother killed in hit-and-run, police seeking black SUV

Providence Police tell Eyewitness News two female pedestrians were struck in a hit-and-run Sunday evening, resulting in the death of an 84-year-old grandmother.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – Providence Police tell Eyewitness News two female pedestrians were struck in a hit-and-run Sunday evening, resulting in the death of an 74-year-old grandmother.

It happened around 5:05 p.m. at the intersection of Broadway and Marshall Street on Providence’s Federal Hill.

Providence Police Lt. Richard Fernandes says the grandmother and her 31-year-old granddaughter were crossing the street when they were hit by a black SUV. Lt. Fernandes says police don’t yet have a further description of the car or a license plate to release.

The grandmother was pronounced dead at Rhode Island Hospital, while the granddaughter was transported to the hospital in stable condition from the scene.

The car took off and police are looking into whether the law offices and a flower shop nearby have security footage of the incident. Witnesses to the hit-and-run are being interviewed by the Traffic Bureau.

The victim has not been identified pending family notification.

Anyone with any information about the black SUV is asked to call Providence Police.
