Police: Suspect hid in closet before robbing New Bedford restaurant

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — New Bedford police are investigating after an armed man reportedly robbed a city restaurant early Monday morning.

According to New Bedford police, a man armed with a handgun hid inside a closet at Cork Wine & Tapas Bar and came out around closing time dressed in black with his face covered.

Police said the man confronted an employee who was closing the restaurant around 1:30 a.m. and ordered her to open a safe on the second floor of the building.

The suspect then told the woman to get inside the same closet he had been hiding in, according to police. The suspect then barricaded the woman inside the closet with a chair.

Police said the woman pushed her way out of the closet after some time when she determined it was quiet and she thought the suspect had left.

According to New Bedford Detective Captain Steven Vicente, it appears the suspect was familiar with the layout of the restaurant.

Police said the man did not vandalize the establishment, but he made off with several envelopes of cash and receipts.

Officials said there is no surveillance video of the area of the building where the robbery took place.
