EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – This week on the first half of Newsmakers: David Butler, the new executive editor of The Providence Journal. The Journal has been Rhode Island’s flagship and dominant daily newspaper for more than a century, but it is facing the same headwinds as newspapers nationally. Butler – who comes to Providence via San Jose – talks about his impressions of The Journal so far and where he sees the paper and the industry headed. (Eyewitness News and The Providence Journal are news partners.)
On the second half: House Minority Leader Brian Newberry, R-North Smithfield. Gov. Gina Raimondo recently formed a 29-member panel to examine the state’s education funding formula, but the group did not include a single Republican lawmaker. Newberry lashed out over that this week, calling the group a “sham.” He also discusses the future of the controversial plan to toll truckers as well as the GOP field of presidential candidates.
