EAST GREENWICH, R.I. (WPRI) — A chase involving several police departments Friday resulted in the arrest of a man suspected of breaking into at least two homes.
While investigating a break-in at a home on Crompton Road in East Greenwich, police spotted a man walking in the area with a bag on his shoulder.
The man – later identified as Gary Fontes – stopped to speak with the officers. He handed over his state ID, according to police, before dropping the bag and making for the woods nearby.
After losing contact with the suspect, police called in Coventry, West Greenwich, Warwick, West Warwick, and Rhode Island State Police to assist in the search.
Police said Fontes was eventually spotted and arrested without incident by a Coventry officer.
The bag left behind by the suspect contained items stolen from a home in West Warwick, according to police.
Fontes, 44, was taken to Kent Hospital to be treated for injuries he claimed to have suffered while fleeing police. He’s now in East Greenwich Police custody on charges of breaking and entering, obstruction, and receiving stolen goods.
Police said the matter remains under investigation and further charges against Fontes may be pending.
