GLOCESTER, R.I. (WPRI) — A Johnston firefighter was arrested on DUI charges following a weekend crash in Glocester.
According to police, Michael Calise was driving westbound on Putnam Pike in the area of Pine Orchard Road just before midnight on Dec. 12 when he crossed over the center lane and struck an oncoming vehicle.
Police said three people were inside the second vehicle, and the driver had to be extricated by first responders. All three were taken to Fatima Hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Calise was not injured.
Officers on scene recovered several unopened cans of beer outside of Calise’s vehicle. Police said Calise showed signs of intoxication and refused to submit to a chemical test.
Calise, 46, of Putnam Pike, was charged with driving under the influence and refusal to submit to a chemical test. He’s a full-time firefighter in Johnston, according to police.
Calise was held overnight and released on $1,000 personal recognizance. He’s scheduled to be arraigned in court Wednesday and was also ordered to appear before the Rhode Island Traffic Tribunal in January to answer to the refusal to submit to a chemical test charge.
