PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Local Muslims opened their doors Saturday for a discussion with community members about their religion.

The Islamic Center of Rhode Island held an open house, called, “Getting to Know Your Muslim Neighbors,” to discuss Islam – which locals say has been in the news recently for all of the wrong reasons.

During the event, community members talked about some recent headlines and addressed negative Muslim stereotypes.

One topic that was hard to ignore during the discussion was Donald Trump’s recent proposal to ban all Muslims from entering the United States.

“His statement, his position has generated a lot of fear and anxiety and apprehension throughout the community,” said Imam Farid Ansari of the Islamic Center of RI. “And it’s our hope to try and counter that by having the public to come in and [see] a true picture of Islam. There’s a lot of misinformation being perpetuated against Islam.”
