PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – Congressman David Cicilline spent Christmas in the Middle East visiting Rhode Islanders who are deployed there.

Ciclline met with several Rhode Islanders in the United States Air Force earlier in the week and then had dinner with some of the Rhode Islanders stationed in Baghdad on Christmas Day.

3,000 American troops are stationed in Iraq.

Cicilline also attended briefings with top military commanders in the region regarding the status of the fight against ISIS.

“It was an incredibly humbling experience to spend Christmas in Iraq with the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces and to have the opportunity to thank them on behalf of all Rhode Islanders.  Our troops and their families are making extraordinary sacrifices in service to our nation and their example is an inspiration to us all,” said Cicilline. “Those who have served our country in uniform embody the very best that our country has to offer. They deserve our strong support and deep gratitude. I wish all of our troops, their families, and loved ones a safe and happy holiday.”
