EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — The new year will require a new porch for an East Providence family.

The Collins family was inside their Washburn Avenue home waiting to celebrate the arrival of 2016 when a familiar face slammed her SUV into their front porch.

“There was a hole that was blown into the foundation,” said Derek Collins. “It spans about 10 feet.”

East Providence police say Brenda Buja was driving drunk when she crashed into the house. She then got out of the car and walked home, which didn’t take long since she lives next door.

The Collins family said they aren’t sure when they’ll be able to fix the front porch.

“It sounded like she was racing the car, foot to the floor flying,” Collins recalled. “The house shook. It was just ‘bang.’ Didn’t know what was going to happen.”

Police said Thursday night’s incident isn’t Buja’s first charge of driving under the influence. In fact, she was arrested for DUI just two weeks ago, according to police.

“Not surprised,” added Collins. “Nothing but problems with her. It doesn’t surprise us at all.”

Buja is being held by police as a bail violator. She’s due in court Monday.
