PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Don’t think the season of giving ended with Boxing Day (December 26).
An annual tradition continued Tuesday, with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence receiving a $100,000 check from the National Grid Foundation for its Keep the Heat On program, which helps needy families stay warm during the winter.
The foundation presented a $100,000 check to the program last year as well. Tuesday’s gift is the third major gift for the program from the foundation.
The diocese’s program has been in operation since 2005, providing heating assistance to Rhode Islanders who have exhausted all other public and private forms of assistance. To date, the program has raised more than $2 million to help more than 9,500 Rhode Island families and individuals.
The National Grid Foundation, for its part, has provided more than $18 million in grants to hundreds of organizations since it was incorporated in 1998.
