Cops: Mom left baby in car at outlet mall

WRENTHAM, Mass. (WPRI) — Despite frigid temperatures, police say an East Providence woman left her 8-month-old baby in the car while she made a trip to Wrentham Outlets.

Wrentham Deputy Police Chief William McGrath told Eyewitness News a shopper called 911 about a baby left alone in a car.

McGrath said the car was parked in a handicapped spot and the baby was inside, crying. He said the child was alone for several minutes.

According to Eyewitness News Meteorologist Tony Petrarca, the temperature in Wrentham at 12:30 p.m. was 22 degrees.

The mother, Yao Liu, of East Providence, was not arrested at the scene. However, McGrath said she is being charged with child neglect and endangerment.

The baby was taken to Norwood Hospital, but is expected to be OK, McGrath said.

The Massachusetts Department of Children and Families is investigating. McGrath said the agency also notified the Rhode Island Department of Children, Youth and Families.
