NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — The New Bedford-Fairhaven Route 6 Swing Bridge will close to traffic Friday at 8 p.m.

The bridge will remain closed until Monday, Jan. 11 at 5 a.m.

According to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, the closure is necessary because the bridge needs permanent repairs to “mechanical components which failed and were temporarily repaired in July.”

MassDOT said the bridge will need to be in the fully open position while the repairs take place (open to boats but closed to traffic). During construction, a detour will be in place to direct traffic around the bridge.

Officials said the schedule for the repairs is weather-dependent and subject to change without notice.
