CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) — Cranston police are actively searching for a suspect after an armed robbery attempt at a city business Friday morning.

According to Lt. Russell Henry, the suspect entered Ocean State Market on Dyer Avenue just before 10 a.m. and displayed a handgun, demanding money.

The incident was caught on the store’s surveillance camera. The hooded suspect can be seen pulling out a gun, and then being chased from the store by the owner.

“I chased him out of the store onto Illinois, I chased him out with my baseball [bat],” said Adil Al Khafaji, the owner of the store. “I worked for U.S. Army for nine years back home as a bodyguard, so he didn’t scare me.”

Khafaji said his store has been targeted before. The first time, he gave the money to the robber. This time, he said he was more prepared and the suspect made off with nothing.

“He didn’t scare me. This happened to me last year, now I’m prepared,” Khafaji said. “A guy came in with a gun, he tried to rob me, but he got nothing from me,”

No one was hurt in the incident.
