PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A 14-year employee of the Providence School Department is facing child abuse charges, police said Saturday.
Anthony Tedeschi is accused of abusing one of the special education students he works with at Esek Hopkins Middle School.
Police told Eyewitness News they went to the school back in October after a staff member said she saw Tedeschi, a special education teacher’s aide, inappropriately touching a male student who has autism.
The school department said it took immediate action and placed Tedeschi, of North Providence, on administrative leave.
Police said new information led officers to place him under arrest Friday night. Tedeschi is now charged with second-degree child abuse.
According to the school department’s payroll records, Tedeschi has worked as a special education aide since 2002. He earned just over $24,000 last year, according to the records.
The school department said Tedeschi will remain on administrative leave until the investigation is concluded.
