NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — Police in New Bedford say they caught a man robbing an apartment Sunday morning.

Officers were called to a building in the area of Union and Lincoln streets by a person who lives on the second floor. The tenant had heard noise coming from the apartment below, but knew the person who lives there was at work.

When the officers arrived at the scene, they found broken window in the back of the home. They could also see movement inside the first-floor apartment.

The suspect, identified by police as Thomas Hurd, tried to flee. However, he was quickly taken into custody.

Investigators say inside the home, Hurd had stacked up a television and other electronics he had planned to steal.

Hurd, 56, of New Bedford, has been charged with larceny and breaking and entering.
