NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — A child was transported to the hospital Thursday after a school bus tried to avoid hitting an open manhole on Route 17 northbound.

According to Massachusetts State Police, the New Bedford Public Schools bus was the only vehicle to hit the open manhole.

A 5-year-old child was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital for precautionary reasons and two adults on the bus were not injured, according to police.

The New Bedford Standard-Times reports the child and two adults were the only people on board during the incident, which happened around 11:15 a.m.

The bus sustained rear-axle damage, according to police.
