New Bedford shooting victim turns up at Wareham hospital

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — A man who said he was shot in New Bedford Sunday night turned up at a hospital about 20 miles away, according to police.

Officers went to the 100 block of Pleasant Street around 6:30 p.m. Sunday, after police said a neighbor reported hearing gunfire. Police said the officers found a blood trail in the driveway; they followed it to a third floor apartment where they also found two shell casings. No one was in the apartment.

A short time later, police said they received a call from Tobey Hospital in Wareham, telling them that they had a 29-year-old shooting victim. The man claimed he’d been shot in New Bedford but would not give a more precise location.

Police said the victim had gunshot wounds to both legs and one of his hands, but was expected to recover. He was taken to Rhode Island Hospital where New Bedford detectives questioned him. Police said the victim continued to give conflicting statements.
