NEWPORT, R.I. – A second-half rally by the Roger Williams University Men’s Basketball team fell just short, as Salve Regina University escaped with a 69-68 home win over the Hawks Wednesday evening.
The Hawks managed to erase a 16-point halftime deficit to take the lead with seven minutes remaining (55-54). RWU would eventually take a six-point lead with just over two minutes left and appeared poised to come back to Bristol with the victory, but the Seahawks had other plans.
Salve Regina would get back-to-back three-point baskets while the Hawks went 1-for-3 at the free throw line in the final minute to help pull the Seahawks within one. That would set up a game-winning jumper by Salve’s Barrett Hanlon to complete the comeback and give the Seahawks the win.
Jaylen Jennings (Norwalk, Conn.) and Austin Coene (Tyngsborough, Mass.) each finished with 17 points for RWU in the game. Trevor Fahmy (Bedford, N.H.) added 13 points and eight rebounds while Nick Marini (Loudonville, N.Y.) 11 points and four boards.
Roger Williams (9-10, 6-5 CCC) hosts Western New England next on Saturday.
