New Bedford police charge man with stealing woman’s purse

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — Police in New Bedford arrested a local man Friday for reportedly stealing a woman’s purse at a supermarket.

According to police, a woman had her purse stolen from her cart as she was loading groceries into her car in the parking lot of a local Market Basket. Police said a witness saw the suspect talking on a cellphone near the woman before snatching her purse and running away.

The witness told police he chased the man to the area of Belleville Avenue and confronted him. According to the witness, the suspect ran away into a nearby yard.

Police searched the area and located to suspect in a yard on Holly Street with the purse.

According to police, the suspect, identified as Gregory McGuire, was placed under arrest and charged with larceny.

McGuire, 31, is scheduled to be arraigned Monday morning in New Bedford District Court.

Police said the purse was returned to the woman.
