NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — A New Bedford man is facing assault charges after police say he attacked a friend with a machete.
Police say Christopher Rogers, 51, and the 37-year-old victim had been drinking together at Rogers’ apartment on Union Street Wednesday night, and a fight between them went out into the street.
The victim had left, trailing blood several blocks to a home on Liberty Street, police said. Once officers found him, they saw him bleeding heavily from a three-inch cut to his hand. The victim said he’d been trying to defend himself when Rogers swung the machete at him.
Neither man would say what the fight was about, police said.
Rescue crews took the victim to St. Luke’s Hospital; his injuries were not considered life-threatening. Police also seized the machete.
Rogers is charged with one count of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and assault with intent to maim.
