House Finance Chairman fined for misreported contributions

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The Rhode Island Board of Elections has fined House Finance Chairman Raymond Gallison for misreporting $18,850 in campaign contributions.

Gallison said in a statement Monday that he has corrected the errors and hired a professional who will be responsible for future filings.

His total penalties amount to $1,600, but $400 of that will be suspended if he submits proper documentation.

The board says it found no evidence of willful violations. It says the misreported contributions from 2011 to 2014 are due to a lack of close and timely bookkeeping.

A consent order signed by the Democratic lawmaker on Wednesday says that he recorded his contributions in the aggregate instead of listing each contributor, as is required.
