(AP) – Influential conservative Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia died in West Texas, the U.S. Marshals Service said on Saturday. He was 79.

“I just learned of the passing of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, and I offer my deep sympathies to his family tonight.”

Although I disagreed with him on many important issues, I have always respected his commitment to public service and the impressive intellect he displayed during three decades on the bench.”

With so many important issues pending before the Supreme Court, the Senate has a responsibility to fill vacancies as soon as possible. It would be unprecedented in recent history for the Supreme Court to go a year with a vacant seat. Failing to fill this vacancy would be a shameful abdication of one of the Senate’s most essential Constitutional responsibilities.”
