Teens, firefighter hospitalized after falling through ice in Barrington

BARRINGTON, R.I. (WPRI) — Barrington rescue crews were called to Brickyard Pond in Veterans Memorial Park Monday for an ice rescue.

According to the Barrington Fire Department, three teenage boys fell through the ice after deciding to go skating after dark.

Lt. Edward Owens said the first boy managed to pull himself out of the water – and made his way to the parking lot to call 911. The other two boys were left in the water until rescue crews arrived. The fire department said they were in the water for about 10 to 15 minutes – about 75 yards off shore.

They were pulled out of the water and all three teens were transported to Hasbro Children’s Hospital. The department isn’t saying what condition the boys were in when they left, but they said they were all able to get to the ambulance on their own.

A firefighter was also taken to the hospital after falling through the ice. At last check, he was being checked out for hypothermia at Rhode Island Hospital.
