SWANSEA, Mass. (WPRI) – A man has been charged with operating under the influence after he drove his car into a local river.

According to the Swansea Fire Department, the report came in just before midnight Saturday of a car in the water at Lee’s River at the end of Bayside Avenue. The driver had already gotten himself out of the car and was sitting on a rock offshore when firefighters arrived.

Rescue crews were able to get the man safely to shore.

Firefighters checked the car and nearby shore for any other passengers and found none. The vehicle was towed out of the water shortly thereafter.

Swansea police said that the driver, 27-year-old David Cannao, was charged with operating under the influence, negligent operation of a vehicle, leaving the scene of property damage and malicious destruction of property.

Officers determined that he intentionally drove his car into the water.

Police also determined that Cannao, of Cranston, was responsible for several other hit and run crashes on parked vehicles in the area.
