FALL RIVER, Mass. (WPRI) – A gym across the street from the scene of Saturday’s mill fire in Fall River is showing its thanks to the firefighters who battled the blaze.
Pro Fitness is offering all active firefighters in Fall River and the surrounding towns a 1-year gym membership for free.
“I knew there was a significant chance that this mill could catch too, but the firefighters did an awesome job,” said owner Ben Pittsley.
Pittsley said the offer was also good for the members of the various other fire departments, including Swansea, Somerset, Freetown and Westport, which responded to assist Fall River’s crews.

“We just gave everybody a free year membership, they can come in and redeem it at any time, any active firefighter that their town sent somebody out, they’re more than welcome to come down,” he said.
The multi-alarm fire started at about 3:30 a.m. Saturday and destroyed the mill on Weaver Street. Every available firefighter in the city responded, and a handful were still on the scene Sunday morning wetting down hot spots in the smoldering ruins.
“They’re everyday superheroes basically, every time they show up to work they’re putting their lives on the line. You can’t thank them enough for doing that,” Pittsley said. “I just want to give back and I think it’s really the least we can do.”
Fire officials said they would likely be there for days trying to completely extinguish the fire. Investigators have not yet been able to begin their work in determining what caused the fire.
