Airport’s Garage ‘C’ remains closed after car fire

WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) – Parking Garage C at T.F. Green Aiport will remain closed Tuesday to allow inspectors to determine if the structure was compromised during an early morning car fire.

Firefighters were called to the garage, which accommodates daily or weekly parking, shortly before 3:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Smoke filled the top floor of Parking Garage C and could be seen coming from the roof of the structure from the Post Road side of the airport.

Several hours later, crews removed two charred SUVs.

Investigators are still determining exactly where the fire started and what sparked it.

While flights were posted on-time, the fire affected passengers trying to get to the terminal. Police closed the Airport Connector for a time, and vehicle traffic was not being allowed onto airport property. Passengers had to be dropped off on Post Road and walk to the terminal.

About 35 percent of passenger traffic comes through the airport before 8 a.m., so this disruption was significant for air travelers.

Anyone trying to park at the airport Tuesday should know the only available parking is at Parking Lot E (long term), with drop-off available through Lot D (hourly), according to Rhode Island Airport Corporation spokeswoman, Patti Goldstein.

Garage C will remain closed Tuesday. However, arriving passengers with vehicles in Garage C will be allowed to get their cars out.
