PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A Scituate man has been found not guilty by reason of insanity in the Thanksgiving Day slaying of his father, the Rhode Island Judiciary confirms.
A judge on Wednesday concluded that 31-year-old Paul Dunbar was insane when he beat his father to death with a baseball bat on Nov. 24, 2011.
The judge issued the ruling following a bench trial.
The judge says Dunbar, who’s been diagnosed with schizophrenia, was convinced leading up to the killing that his parents were poisoning him and his father was evil.
Dunbar’s mother was preparing Thanksgiving dinner when Dunbar retrieved a bat and struck his father in the head. Seventy-one-year-old Milo Dunbar was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead.
The judge ordered that Dunbar continue to be held at Eleanor Slater Hospital.
