Survivor speaks out after car crash

CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) – A car crash survivor is trying to bring awareness to the dangers of drunk driving.

On February 13, Jeffery Fagundes and his pregnant wife were driving home from the movies, when an alleged drunk driver smashed into their car in Warwick.

The head-on collision left him in a wheelchair and his wife in a sling.

In an exclusive interview with Eyewitness News, Fagundes tells us, “The driver didn’t take a life, but he definitely took a solid year out of my life, which to me, is kind of the same thing.”

The community is coming together to help the couple, by creating a GoFundMe.com page to help pay for some of their unexpected medical bills.

Fagundes says, “I’m not typically the type to go out and ask for things like that … set my pride aside because I knew we needed it.”

The accused driver is 51-year old Bernard Sabetta.

Fagundes says he hopes he’s healthy enough to attend Sabetta’s court hearing in the spring.
