FALL RIVER, Mass. (WPRI) — The number of Kmart stores in Southern New England will be reduced to two after the Fall River location closes its doors in May, a spokesperson for Sears Holdings Corporation confirmed Tuesday.
A liquidation sale at the New Harbour Mall Kmart will begin March 10 and the store will remain open to customers until late May.
Howard Riefs, Director of Corporate Communications for Sears Holdings Corp., said the closure is part of the company’s attempt “to reduce ongoing expenses, adjust our asset base, and accelerate the transformation of our business model.”
Riefs said the store employs 79 people, most of which are part-time and hourly. They’ll have the opportunity to apply for open positions at area Sears and Kmart stores and those that are eligible will receive severance.
