NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — A man who police said was detained by immigration officials more than a decade ago was arrested in New Bedford Monday night on drug and gun charges.
Police said officers took Elvis Freddy Camacho-Perdomo, 34, into custody as he left his North Front Street apartment. He was scheduled to be arraigned in New Bedford District Court Tuesday morning.
Police said they seized a Ruger .357 handgun, more than 50 rounds of ammunition, several opioid painkillers, and over $6,000 in cash from Camacho-Perdomo’s apartment.
Officers also found a Costa Rican ID card and several Western Union slips. Police said the slips indicated the suspect had wired money to Colombia.
According to police, federal immigration officials in Miami picked up Camacho-Perdomo in 2003, claiming he was a stowaway. Police said no other details were available on the circumstances of his detention.
