Detours, parking bans in place for Newport St. Patrick’s Day Parade

NEWPORT, R.I. (WPRI) — Preparations are being made for Newport’s annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade and city police are warning residents, businesses and attendees about some travel and parking restrictions.

The parade kicks off at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 12, but police said traffic will be congested in the downtown area from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. and parking will be limited.

Participants will gather on lower Broadway at about 9 a.m., so police recommend that parade-goers avoid that area. Police said the two best routes into the city with available parking are:

  • Westbound on Memorial Blvd, right onto Bellevue Avenue (northbound), left on Church Street and right into the Waterfront Parking lot (situated between Church and Mary Streets)
  • Farewell Street South to America’s Cup Avenue and right into the Gateway parking garage

To make sure the parade is a safe, family-friendly event, police said they will have a strong presence along the route and will be strictly enforcing city ordinances such as open containers of alcohol, underage drinking, disorderly conduct, and noise violations.

Below is the parade route:

  • Parade Begins: Lower Broadway
  • Washington Square
  • Thames Street southbound
  • XOA to America’s Cup southbound
  • Thames Street southbound at Memorial Boulevard
  • Carroll Avenue
  • Parade ends at St. Augustin’s Church

Parking is prohibited from 5 a.m. until 3 p.m. on the following streets:

All vehicles parked in the restricted areas will be towed, according to police.
