P-Bruins extend home point streak, lose to Hartford in shootout

PROVIDENCE, RI – Frankie Vatrano forced overtime with just seconds left to play in regulation to extend the P-Bruins home point streak to 22 games. Vatrano is now the first player in the AHL to reach the 30 goal plateau this season, in just 29 games.

Despite a shot differential of 15-7 in favor of Hartford, the first period was an even affair with both teams producing two legitimate scoring opportunities. Both teams had one unsuccessful power play.

Alexander Khokhlachev broke the scoring drought 4:11 into the 2nd to put the P-Bruins up 1-0. Max Talbot passed to Khokhlachev on the right hashes who skated in and fired a wrister from the high slot that just slipped through Hellberg’s five hole.

Jeremy Smith came up big in net during the last five minutes of the period when Providence was forced to kill Ben Sexton’s 5 minute major for boarding.

Hartford came out all cylinders firing in the third, with Adam Tambellini scoring twice in a matter of 2:18 to pull ahead 2-1. But the P-Bruins fought back and pounded Hellberg with a blitzkrieg of shots in the final minutes of regulation. It was Vatrano’s shot from the top of the right circle that eventually found the back of the net. His goal with 0:34 left to play tied the game 2-2 and forced overtime.

Providence suffered a bench penalty for too many men on the ice but managed to kill off the 4v3 disadvantage. Neither team was able to capitalize in the 5 minutes of sudden death overtime.

Tambellini was the first to score in the shootout, but Vatrano responded with a goal for Providence. Luke Adam scored in the 5th round, which Czarnik was not able to reciprocate.

The Providence Bruins are back home at the Dunk tomorrow March 12th against the Toronto Marlies.
