Police dispatcher placed on leave amid criminal investigation

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Providence detectives have opened a criminal investigation into a recent hire at the city’s police department.

Providence Public Safety Commissioner Steven Pare confirmed Tuesday that the dispatcher, who’s been on the job less than three months, has been placed on paid administrative leave.

Pare would not elaborate on the nature of the investigation, but said the woman’s personal cell phone was seized by detectives.

The case is not connected to a prisoner that escaped Providence police custody Tuesday afternoon, according to Pare.

Pare said the dispatcher’s name will be released if charges are filed.
