PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A shooting suspect who escaped Providence police custody Tuesday was captured after about four hours on the run.
According to Major David Lapatin, Michael Drepaul was apprehended about two miles from the station.
Drepaul was initially arrested Tuesday in connection with a recent shooting at a city convenience store.
Lapatin said it appeared the holding cell wasn’t properly closed, allowing Drepaul to escape at about 1:15 p.m.
“Detectives followed a lead that brought them to 20 Deborah Street,” the major explained. “They surrounded the house and the suspect has been apprehended.”
Target 12 Investigator Tim White was first to break the news on Twitter.

Lapatin said the cell was an original from when the building was constructed in the early 2000s and the technology hasn’t been updated.
The incident remains under investigation.
