Taunton cops ID suspect killed in armed home invasion

TAUNTON, Mass. (WPRI) — Police say the man shot to death inside a Taunton apartment building Monday night was killed when the victim of an armed home invasion fought back.

The Bristol County District Attorney’s office say they received a call to 103 Hart Street for reports of shots fired. When they arrived to Building Five, officers said they found the apartment’s tenant waiting on the balcony and Dominique Scott, 23, of Taunton shot to death inside the apartment.

The 24-year-old man who lives in the apartment told police when he heard knocking and answered his door, two armed and masked men forced their way inside. He said one of the men held him at gunpoint while Scott rummaged through the apartment. At that point, the tenant told police he was able to wrestle the gun away from the suspect holding him.

The tenant told police when Scott heard the commotion, he drew his weapon and the tenant shot him with the other suspect’s gun.

The other suspect took off from the apartment and the tenant called 911.

Police say the tenant is being questioned by officers and prosecutors but is not facing criminal charges at this time.

The DA’s office says police are still investigating how the home invasion suspects got into the building, which is kept locked, in order to knock on the tenant’s apartment door.

The second suspect is still being sought.

The shooting was the second homicide in the city in a matter of hours Monday. Earlier in the evening, a woman was found slashed or stabbed to death inside a Morton Street apartment.
